The Truth About Pool Cleaners: What Your Pool Store Isn’t Telling You

Pool Cleaner
Fifteen years into the 2000s, the landscape has changed in the world of retail. Where we used to have to go to visit a specialty store to purchase any given item, the presence of the internet makes essentially any searchable product a click away. Traditional brick and mortar stores are becoming less and less viable, particularly those that service niche markets. Change is difficult and small businesses have to be comfortable embracing an “adapt or die” philosophy with the emergence of competitively-priced web stores who fill a similar need as a physical store.

This can be difficult because web stores operate with lower overhead and can typically offer lower price points on the exact same products. Ailing stores have implemented many tactics as a means to compete, like preaching “our store provides superior service,” which often falls on the ears of a generation to whom that is no longer a top priority. Another tool is price matching. Providing a price-match guarantee can be risky, but instead of losing the sale, the retailer sees it as better to have a loss of revenue rather than have that money walk out of the door altogether. However, price-matching can have its negative long-term effects that result in stores not making the kind of money necessary to be successful. As a result, retail stores have turned to a few new tactics including branding products that are exclusive to their store.

This common struggle among specialty brick and mortar stores has manifested itself in the pool industry and many pool supply stores will brand their own chemicals and everyday products to be distributed exclusively on site. This tactic has also been used on more expensive products, specifically pool cleaners. As a way to compete with the ease and convenience of e-tailers, some pool stores will partner with product manufacturers (pool cleaners in particular) to sell products that are only available through them. But here is what your pool store isn’t telling you.

Manufacturers will private label pool cleaners for different dealers and distributers with whom they have partnered. These products are essentially the same as existing models of cleaners already on the market and widely available through a number of online retailers, with maybe a few minor cosmetic changes (colors, etc.) and accompanying accessories (remote control or carrying caddy). Under a private label, pool stores will sell pool cleaners for a premium to unsuspecting customers who have no idea there is a less expensive alternative. In reality, there is usually a comparable model available from an e-tailer at a significantly lower price point.

Because we want to find ways to best serve our customer base, we decided to make a list of all of these private label pool cleaners and their less expensive equivalent. Let’s take a deeper look at a few specific examples:

Private label pool cleaner:

Aquabot Breeze XLS

The AquaBot Breeze XLS is a robotic pool cleaner that has some nice features: power washing jets, fixed scrubbing brushes, 1 & 2 Hour Timer Settings, etc. It requires a 120VAC/60, consumes 180 watts of powers, and has a 60’ long cable. It features a warm cream exterior that gives it a clean and expensive look.

Comparable pool cleaner:

AquaBot Rapids XLS

The only differences here are the colors, availability, and price point. The Aquabot Rapid model is available through a number of reputable online retailers. Featuring a grey and blue plastic exterior as opposed to the cream, all the other features are the same or nearly the same. The private label cleaner, however, will cost you more.

Private label pool cleaner:

Polaris P955

The Polaris P955 is another robotic pool cleaner with many impressive capabilities. It runs a 1.5 hour cleaning cycle, cleans the floor, walls, and steps of your in-ground pool, and has neat features like four wheel drive. It comes with a motion sensing hand held remote and a caddy with easy lift options. The exterior plastic color is a clean white with black and grey wheels.

Comparable pool cleaner:

Polaris 9550

The Polaris 9550 is basically the same pool cleaner as the Polaris P955 except it is blue instead of white. It too comes with a caddy and remote and has the same features described above. The major difference (aside from the color) is in the price. While the P955 is sold exclusively as a private label product through one particular company, the 9550 is available through many retailers and ecommerce and is gentler on your wallet.

Private labeling a particular pool cleaner is a surefire way to upsell the customer. It seems exclusive and custom, when it’s usually only a color away from the same product at a lower premium. Manufacturers change the colors and the name as a way to convince you to pay more money. Because potential buyers in today’s day and age are looking cross-reference and price match, changing the name of the product altogether limits the buyer’s ability to search for and find a competitively priced product. That’s why we’ve compiled this list of private label cleaners vs. more affordable products with essentially the same capabilities. If you find any more duplicates we have not included or have any questions about products that are the same or similar to pool cleaners already on the market, please let us know and we will research and get them added to the list. Today’s consumer is the most informed they have ever been and they should be wary of being tricked because their brick and mortar store or exclusive online brands have private-labeled pool cleaners as a way to make a few extra bucks.

LIST GUIDE: Search our compiled list alphabetically to find your prospective cleaner and see if there's a non-private label version equivalent. Please let us know if there are any pool cleaners you're researching that should be added to the master list.

Wow, finally! I've been researching robots for a few days now and thought for sure I would find something like this as a "sticky" on a swimming pool forum or an online review website, but I never did. Thanks so much for adding this to your website. This post makes me want to buy my robot from your store. Nicely done!

I found the information at the website below, from Maytronics, to be very helpful as well, especially when combined with your list for reference.

Thank you! It's amazing how difficult it is to answer simple questions like "Is the M5 supposed to be better than the DX6, or vice-versa?" This list definitely helps clarify things a bit.

It is only going to get harder and harder in the pool industry. This trend of changing the name and color is making its way into all types of pool and spa supplies. We will keep on it if the trend gets bigger in other areas like it has in pool cleaners.

Could you add Dolphin DX5+S to your list.
And I totally agree with previous comments that this like sticking GOLD after wading from website to website trying to ascertain what differed among the Maytronics offerings and having sales people tell me that "theirs" is equivalent to "a specific other" but without specifications for each to back up their claim. Abount the only thing I could figure out were a few that had shorter warranty period (2 vs. 3 years) and wondered whether that implied Maytronics was not as comfortable with the units with shorter warranties.
    THANX again for publishing this

We do not carry the Z5 as it is a private label cleaner and the M5 is only supposed to be sold in retail stores. We do sell the Triton Plus Pool Cleaner which is the same cleaner as the Z5 and M5. It is the best option for that cleaner due to its lower cost since it isn't a retail store or private label model. The warranty on the Triton Plus is 24 Months. On the Z5 and the M5 it is 36 months but comes with a much higher price.
      We hope this helps.

Respectfully I think some of the information you list is pretty invalid. You say "Dolphin Triton Plus = Dolphin Supreme M5 (M500) = Dolphin Oasis Z5" The M5 (M500) has 3 cleaning brushes vs. two on the Oasis Z5. In my opinion, that makes the M5 better and quite a bit different. As a new pool owner I'm starting to hate Maytronics marketing and model number mess. So, I agree with your overall article. I just think the comparisons are off.

We haven't been able to find any with the same specifications as the Dolphin Nautilus Plus. There are a couple that look similar like the Dolphin Smart Active, Dolphin Zenit 10 and Dolphin Active 3 but we are finding conflicting info on the size of pool they are designed to clean and cord lengths. They say they are designed for pools that are only 33 feet in length. If anyone has any experience with these cleaners we would love to hear your thoughts.

Hi, Im happy to throw my .02 in on the Nautlus and the Nautilus Plus.
I have the "regular" Nautilus and a friend of mine got the new Nautilus Plus. The main differences are
Plus has a top loading filter - Nautilus has bottom loading filter
Plus has a handle on top of it so make getting it out of the pool much easier. - Nautilus doesnt have a handle at all.
The cord is 50 feet long. Same as the regular Nautilus.
The Plus does not have the "no tangle" cord on it like the regular Nautilus does, but Maytronics says there is "no tangle" programming that renders the no tangle cord of no consequence. I guess only time will tell about that!

Other than the above differences, they are the same. Same scurbbers, tracks, motor, same power supply.

    Reply
    • Sunplay

They are identical units except for the name and the color scheme. The Active 10 and S50 don't have any manufacturers warranty if bought online. They are models for brick and mortar retail stores only. They just released the Dolphin E-10 which is also the same as the Dolphin Active 10 and the Dolphin S50. This model is sold only online and comes with a 1 year manufacturers warranty and should save you quite a bit.

Yes, I found it. It is called the Aqua-Elite and here is the link.

      https://www.poolbots.com/pool-cleaner-categories/inground-robotic-pool-cleaners/aquabot-elite-robotic-pool-cleaner

This is the Rapids 2000 under the name Aqua-Elite. Price online is $1097. A very respectable price too. I am very glad to have this option because if the trends are similar to other pool cleaners, the identical twin Rapids 2000 will likely cost alot more at a local pool store. I find some of these local pool store prices for cleaners unreasonable and unjustified. If they can be sold eventually for a price almost 50% less than these pool stores prices, even under a different brand or label, then there has to be a considerable markup. It's like they want to recover all the research and development on 1 sale. Not fair at all. They have all of these labels for 1 machine to confuse everyone so I look at this industry as a bunch of dishonest liars. If they have any decency, they would make it clear that a model they sell is the exact same thing as the other 4 or 5 twin models we can buy elsewhere for less. I was even told by one pool store rep that the Dolphin Active 30 he was selling was not the same as the 300i and that the 300i was problematic. He effectively just criticized his own product and proved my point. That's the dishonesty of this market. If they were reasonable and honest, they wouldn't have trouble making sales. They are the architects of their own destruction and I will continue to bypass their smoke and mirrors by doing more research and finding a deal elsewhere.

Excellent information on robotic cleaners, I've been researching for 2 wks now and still haven't come to a decision. Pretty sure I'm going with either a Dolphin Nautilus Plus (excellent reviews), but a local retailer carries the S series. Price comp would be the S200 (looking to stay below $1k). Do you have any preference over either of these models? It seems that the S200 does not have the tangle free device in the cord. I have a 32' vinyl inground. Thank you!!.

Polaris TR35P is not equivalent to the 3900. 3900 is a chain driven cleaner whereas the TR35P is belt driven. The TR is comparable to a Polaris 380, but when purchased in store includes a leaf bag, tail sweep pro, and a year extra warranty over the 380.

Thank you for all the research and information on pool cleaners. What a racket!!! I have narrowed down my search to tow units, the Dolphin Neptune Plus and the Dolphin Nautilus Plus. I am having a hard time comparing these two units. Both are about the same price, each with a 2 year warranty. Do you have any recommendations or can you provide any insights into the differences?

What a find. Do retailers on and offline actually realize that they are doing their customers a huge disservice with these zillions of different labels for the same thing. Heck, it's difficult enough coming to a decision just looking at the original number of models. We don't need derivates and cousins!

The list above clears up a lot of my confusion which not even digging deep into the Maytronics site could.

For those of you still paralyzed by choice - there is only so much sensible research you can do. Personally, I read any feedback I can find for a couple of days to see whether any complaints interfere with what I absolutely need from my pool cleaner. Then, if the warranty is at least 2 years I go for it. These are little machines and there will always be an element of risk. And so far no pool cleaner has proven to be perfect for years on end for every pool. However, this page makes it so much easier to compare info on different websites - grand. Many, many thanks. I just wonder - how do you find all this info?

Great idea. Let's take business away from hard working people who grind for years, learning the ins and outs of pools so that when John & Jane Doe down the road have a pool problem, there's no experts left to help them out. Because a couple of bottom feeders running an internet site took their business opportunities away. Now the student who use to rely on his job at the pool shop to pay his rent is out of a job because his boss can't afford to pay him anymore.

Pool shops, just like any business, need to make decent profit margins to survive. As this article states, there are numerous overheads for a business that operates in a walk-in premises. Do the right thing and support local business.
